Richard Hamilton was an English artist known for producing some of the earliest works of Pop Art. Though he used a wide variety of techniques during his career, his most recognisable works, such as Study for a Fashion Plate (1969), were done in collage. “It’s not so easy to create a memorable image,” he once reflected. “Art is made through the sensibilities of an artist, and the kind of ambitions and intelligence, curiosity and inner direction that role requires.”

The above work is titled Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? features a collage of popular aspects of the 50s, such as Marilyn Monroe. This highlights the face that most people just follow the crowd and rarely step outside the box.
Art is one of the easiest ways to get a message across. For this task, the goal was to produce thumbnail sketches and eventually a collage similar to the works of Richard Hamilton. I started off by writing a list with the components that I wanted to feature in my interpretation of today’s society. The list consisted of; a pizza take away box, a selfie stick, a Starbuck’s coffee cup and computer games. After this, I began making thumbnail sketches of layout ideas. This allowed me to see where I should place each element in the scene. Then, I made a colour version to see the line sketches come to life. The final stage of the workshop was to put all my sketches into action and create a mixed media response using Photoshop and found images from google.
